How Do You Deter Sugar Cravings?
Ahhh, sugar. We all want it. You’re a big fat liar if you say you don’t – even super fit people. We all crave it at some point. So what’s the best way to deal with sugar cravings?
They often occur due to a deficiency. It takes some guesswork and time to figure out what your body really wants. One thing is for sure – the last thing you should eat when you have sugar cravings, is sugar.
1. Handful of nuts or 1 Tablespoon of nut butter
Nuts are a good source of fat. Fat makes us feel full longer because it takes twice as long to burn. Nuts also provide B vitamins, protein and other nutrients your body needs.
Just a handful though, or 1 TBS of nut butter with an apple, celery, or banana.
2. 1/4 Cup of On-the-Go Guacamole
Another good fat source, avocados can deter sugar cravings and hunger at the same time. Have guacamole as a dip with veggies, or a quick spread on whole grain toast. Avocados are a great source of fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid. Go Guac!
3. 1/2 Cup of Steamed Edamame
Edamame, or soybeans, provide a complete protein. Protein deficiency can cause sugar cravings, so I always have some steamed edamame on hand. If they seem bland, add a pinch of sea salt. Delicious, 1/2 cup packs 9 g of fiber, 11 g of protein, and other nutrients – these babies keep you going!
4. 1/2 Cup Roasted Chic Peas
You can season and roast chic peas to make a high protein, high fiber, on-the-go, healthy snack. The protein and complex carbohydrates can deter those sugar cravings and give you energy to get through your day.

5. Sneaky Oatmeal
Oatmeal takes super long to burn off, so it wards off sugar cravings. It’s a top appetite suppressant and hunger fighter. When you make some for breakfast, always make some extra for a sneaky snack that you can quickly heat up when you need it.
If that doesn’t work, make your own low sugar granola. Add nuts or seeds. Remember – good fats are better for you than added sugar. Plus, they keep hunger away!
Give these snacks a try and let me know how it goes!
